The Light of Hope on Alcatraz began as a fictional vision in Jim Reid’s book There Are No Lifeboats. In the story, Alcatraz is transformed from a prison island into a world landmark of beauty, memory, ecological conscience, public participation, and hope. 

This website presents both the fiction and the civic idea inside it. The dream is to imagine whether Alcatraz could someday become more than a preserved prison. Could it also become a sculptural garden, illuminated beacon, and new wonder of the world rising from San Francisco Bay? 

The Light of Hope does not erase Alcatraz’s history. It depends on that history. The power of the idea comes from the transformation: a place once associated with confinement becomes a place of reflection, imagination, responsibility, and hope.
