The Light of Hope is imagined as an island-scale sculptural garden and illuminated civic landmark on Alcatraz. Visitors would experience monumental art, garden pathways, symbolic animals, memorial tiles, light, sound, water, history, and the surrounding beauty of San Francisco Bay. 

The project’s central image is a mother-and-children monument. The mother figure, Makawee, stands at the heart of the island with four children. Together they create the visual and emotional center of the Light of Hope. At night, beams of light rise from the children’s hands and gather into one beam above her raised hand, turning the island into a visible beacon. 

Around the island, animal ambassadors would represent the living world. Memorial tiles would allow ordinary people, families, schools, cities, and donors to participate. The Blue Whale Passage would create a dramatic visitor experience, allowing people to enter or leave through a monumental whale form. 

The Light of Hope is not meant to be decoration. Every element should carry meaning: memory, participation, beauty, awe, and public purpose.
