Alcatraz is known around the world as a prison island. That is exactly why it matters. 

The Light of Hope would not erase Alcatraz’s past. It would preserve the prison, historic structures, lighthouse, shoreline, bird habitat, and National Park meaning while asking whether the island can carry one additional chapter. 

A former prison has extraordinary symbolic power. If a place known for confinement can also become a place of hope, then the transformation itself becomes the message. 

Alcatraz sits in the center of San Francisco Bay, visible from the city, the bridges, the ferries, Angel Island, Marin, and the East Bay. It is already one of the most recognized places in the world. The Light of Hope would use that visibility not for spectacle alone, but for civic imagination.
