What Would Visitors See and Feel?
A visitor steps off the ferry expecting stone, wind, prison walls, and history. Those remain. But then the visitor begins to encounter something new: pathways, gardens, bronze forms, porcelain tiles, animals, light, water, and the Bay opening in every direction.
The experience should unfold slowly. Visitors would understand that they are not entering an amusement park or commercial attraction. They are entering a place of reflection and wonder.
They might pass through the Blue Whale Passage. They might walk among animal ambassadors arranged across the island. They might stand beside human-scale figures of moral witnesses. They might trace memorial tiles placed by families from around the world. They might look back toward San Francisco and see the skyline through the meaning of the island.
By day, the Light of Hope would be a sculptural garden. By night, it would become a beacon.
The emotional arc should be:
awe, quiet, memory, reflection, gratitude, and renewed courage.
